Information about Edward Gordon

Back to his artwork

Edward Gordon has become well known for his ability to combine fine architectural detailing with the movement of light on surface and landscape. Each painting captures brilliant light and subtle shadows in a style distinctly his own.

He begins all his pieces with a detailed pencil drawing, planning his paintings to achieve the best overall effect. His unique glazing technique--painting then sanding, then painting again--results in a finish like glass, inviting the eye to move easily through the spaces of another time.

Working in oil-based alkyds, he takes advantage of the drying time slower than that of acrylics, and faster than that of oils. With them he can work on a painting continuously, adding a new coat of paint each day. As he paints, he uses up to 3 or 4 color layers to develop the soft transitions from lights to darks that give his paintings their characteristic glow.

Having painted the New England countryside and architecture of the area for years, Edward now lives in Mendicino, California; however, his paintings still reflect to his love of New England.

Edward Gordon was the winner of the 1993 The Artist's Magazine award for Landscape Painting, first place for the 1995 Cover Competition. His merits include the 1993 Sagendorph award, "Painter of the Year" in the 1998 Spotlight on the Arts competition. His work has also been featured in many national magazines and various publications.
